Up to 60 jobs have been put at risk after Transitions Optical announced that it is to reduce manufacturing output at its Tuam plant in Ireland and move much of its manufacturing volume to Asia.
The manufacturer has sought to trim its workforce of 170 employees and has begun a formal redundancy process. Employees that lose their jobs will receive a ‘generous’ severance package and outplacement services.
Transitions Optical plant director Kevin Minton said: ‘We have looked at this every way we can and we have little option. Manufacturing volume will be moved to Asia to look after our clients there, while the remaining manufacturing done here will be for our European customers. The customer support and administration functions will remain here as well.
