More than half of the 121 candidates sitting OSCE exams last September passed the final assessment, the College of Optometrists reported this week.

The OSCE took place for the first time at the Royal College of General Practitioners in London, with 17 five-minute stations including 16 clinical tasks and a rest station.

Skills assessed included history taking, communication, data interpretation, clinical examination and practical skills.

The College has hosted four OSCEs a year since its inception in July 2010, with another due next month.

Head of examinations Joseph Oakley said: ‘Many congratulations to those candidates who have passed their final assessment, and welcome to the profession. The OSCE is the final hurdle in the Scheme for Registration’s assessment process, and those who pass have clearly demonstrated the ability to put all that they have learnt through their degree and pre-registration training into practice.’
