The Association of British Dispensing Opticians (ABDO) will discuss the outcome of the recent fitness to practise hearing involving Boots Opticians and its consequences for the optical profession with the other optical bodies.
ABDO said that it would also review its guidance regarding the supervision of students after contesting with Boots Opticians whether it had given permission for the training regime of Trevor Burgess at its Isle of Man practice.
Burgess was found guilty of misconduct by the General Optical Council's fitness to practise committee for dispensing to a 14-year-old boy without proper supervision on two occasions while a trainee. Boots Opticians was also fined £30,000 at the same hearing over the lack of supervision given to Burgess (News 03.07.09).
