The mother of the child at the centre of the recent fitness to practise case involving Boots Opticians and the supervision of staff has called on the GOC to tighten supervision regulations to include adults and has added that she will pursue civil action against the multiple.
As reported in Optician, (03.07.09), Boots Opticians was fined £30,000 by a GOC fitness to practise committee over the lack of supervision given to a trainee dispensing optician. The Council had proven allegations that the company did not take reasonable steps to prevent trainee Trevor Burgess dispensing to a 14-year-old boy without proper supervision on two occasions.
