North Yorkshire-based Airedale Opticians hosted its 10th annual Easter egg spectacles design competition with Glusburn Community Primary School to raise awareness about the importance of children’s eye care.

Year three school pupils were invited to design spectacles on Easter Eggs and give their creations names, with the artwork being displayed in the practice windows until after the half term holidays.

Optometrist and practice owner, Mohammed Hafejee, said the competition enabled children to think of optical practices not just in terms of testing eyes, but also about the design, colour and shape of frames.

‘The competition allows the kids, parents and passers-by to view the practice window, look inside and vote on which design they thought was best.

'We’ve had councillors vote on the best, used social media to get locals to decide on the most deserving design and each year we evolve and adjust the design, the brief, the voting and size of chocolate treat.’

Hafejee added that the practice’s efforts to engage with the community had reduced the fear of attending an eye examination.
