Airline security measures continue to affect contact lens wearers despite the relaxation of some restrictions on hand baggage.

Last week, the Department for Transport announced an increase in the size of cabin baggage allowed onboard aircraft for passengers travelling from and through UK airports. But the ban on liquids permitted through airline security search points remains (News, September 1).

Passengers boarding flights from the UK to the US are still subject to extra restrictions no liquids purchased in the departure lounge are allowed in the aircraft cabin, hand baggage is searched at the departure gate and any liquids removed.

However, from Tuesday, travellers on international and domestic flights from US airports are now allowed to carry through security travel-size toiletries of 3oz or less, provided they are in a small, clear plastic, zip-up bag. The US authorities said this policy was unlikely to change in the near future.
