The Department for Transport (DfT) told Optician this week that the ban on liquids in hand baggage, imposed in the wake of an alleged terrorist plot, would continue. Although the UK threat level has been downgraded, the DfT said no liquids of any type, including contact lens solutions, are permitted through airport security.

However, prescription medicines, including eye drops, are exempt. 'It's all about what's needed for the flight,' a spokesman said. 'If eye drops are deemed essential for the journey it should be OK.' He added that no documentation for prescription medicines was needed although security staff might check the medication at the gate with a pharmacist.
