A new formulation of Travatan (40 micrograms/ml eye drops, solution travoprost) has been launched by Alcon Laboratories
It is aimed at addressing the irritation and inflammation some glaucoma patients can experience with preservatives.
The formulation uses Polyquad as a preservative in place of benzalkonium chloride (BAK), available at the same price to the NHS.
Recent studies have shown that long-term use of BAK preparations can be associated with undesirable adverse effects such as dry eye, local irritation and inflammation.
Niven Smith, general manager of Alcon Laboratories (UK), said: 'We believe we are responding to a previously unmet medical need by providing the first BAK-free multi-dose prostaglandin analogue available in the UK.'
