Vision Express optometrist Alec Oakley retired earlier this week after practising for 34 years in Bideford, Devon. Oakley joined the practice, then a Batemans Opticians, in 1978 after moving from London. In that time, Oakley said he has looked after approximately 75,000 patients and identified several potentially fatal conditions - including a patient with a growth on the back of his eye which turned out to be linked to his bowel cancer.
'I have never regretted for a minute making the move to Bideford. It is a beautiful part of the world and the people are a pleasure to look after. I consider many as friends as well as patients, and in a lot of cases I am caring for three generations of a family,' said Oakley.
