Industry body EFCLIN is to seek funding from the European Union to investigate the application of wavefront technology to optical correction.

At its annual general meeting in Venice last weekend, the European Federation of the Contact Lens Industry agreed to apply for research grants under the Eureka and Craft funding banners. The project will look at how wavefront technology can be used to improve various methods of optical correction: spectacles, contact lenses, intraocular lenses and refractive surgery.

Chairman of the federation's working group on wavefront technology, Ken Payne of Contamac, said the main focus initially was likely to be contact lenses. Wavefront technology is already being used to correct higher-order optical aberrations, particularly in corneal ablation.

The AGM was held during EFCLIN's annual congress, attended by 270 delegates and 25 exhibitors from 30 countries. A full report will be published soon in Optician.
