Liveryman Anthony Gasson (pictured) died recently after a bravely borne illness. The funeral was attended by many members of the Worshipful Spectacle Makers Company (WCSM) as well as colleagues from the optical, cricketing and golfing communities.

Gasson came from an optical family which included his grandfather, father, two uncles and two cousins. For several years he managed a Mayfair practice with many international and celebrity patients. He subsequently set up his own very successful practice in Rickmansworth which on his retirement was taken over by his former optometric assistant. For several years he supervised clinics at the then London Refraction Hospital (Institute of Optometry).

He served for a time as a steward for the WCSM and was a valued committee member of the Spectacle Makers Society. He was a life member of the MCC and founder of the Fork and Putter golfing society. His other main interest was opera; his personal collection was said to be one of the finest in the world in private hands.
