AOP opposes introduction of degree apprenticeships for optometry

Association of Optometrists (AOP) has released a statement saying that it will be opposing the introduction of degree apprenticeships for optometry.

AOP’s chief executive Henrietta Alderman said: ‘Your contributions to the debate have raised good reasons to oppose the proposal, including the risks to patient safety, and the potential damage to the credibility of optometrists as key health professionals. Our consultation response due by December 9 will make those points powerfully, and we will be seeking follow-up meetings with the various bodies involved in the proposal.’

Alderman also highlighted a misunderstanding about the AOP’s involvement in the apprenticeship trailblazer groups and proposal, explaining that it has not been involved in the process.
