Glasgow-based optometrist Arshid (Ashy) Monir has died aged 51 following a stroke.

Ashy, as he was known to friends, graduated from Caledonian University in Glasgow and was a Dollond & Aitchison director before opening his own practice, Arshid Monir Opticians, in Kildrostan Street, Glasgow.

Paying tribute to Ashy, Paul Robinson, director of Look Designs, said: 'Ashy was a huge character - lighting up a room with his infectious laugh and smile and seriously wicked sense of humour. From his appearance as a Scottish Asian in a Homepride Sauce advert to his work as official optician for his beloved Glasgow Rangers, he was a high profile and hugely respected member of his community.'
