Sue Southgate reports from Stratford-upon-Avon on the ABDOconference and argues that its breadth and excellent attendance underlines the importance of well-supported CET for the profession

ABDO has developed a winning formula for the structure of its CET conferences and this was repeated and enhanced at Stratford-upon-Avon on the weekend of September 18-19. Three streams of lectures on refractive surgery, contact lenses and prismatic influences in dispensing practice were held, followed by related workshops lasting throughout the Sunday afternoon. For the refractive surgery presentations ABDO was very fortunate to have both Frank Howes (director of ophthalmology Mid-Yorkshire NHS Trust) and Christa Gore (Rosen Eye Surgery). They presented the range of procedures that are available and the preoperative investigations that are undergone by patients. This was followed by workshops arranged by Annie Howes, working with Frank and Christa, providing delegates with the opportunity to experience a number of the measurements that are taken in the preoperative stage. Delegates were also treated to a video of a live Lasik operation to observe the end result. Delegates found this stream helpful as more patients are making enquiries about refractive procedures at the point of dispensing.
