Asda Opticians has started accepting applications for its first pre-registration optometrist programme with vacancies available for 2025-2026.
The supermarket-based multiple offered the scheme in partnership with Optom Academy, who Asda Opticians said added a wealth of experience to providing training and education.
Pre-reg students will work alongside professionally trained optometrist supervisors, who will mentor and guide them through their qualification, as well receiving support from a team of in-practice colleagues and managers.
Kristy Jackson, optical professional development manager at Asda Opticians, told Optician: ‘This pre-registration programme is the latest branch of Asda’s professional development programme with Level 6 Dispensing Optician apprenticeship and Contact Lens Diploma cohorts starting their courses this summer.
‘This new programme sees Asda Opticians continue to support the career development of their optical colleagues and professionals, whilst supporting the wider optical professional workforce demands.’
Asda Opticians has also launched an apprenticeship programme giving optical assistants the opportunity to become dispensing opticians, in what it called an industry first.
In August, 13 people started studying towards the Level 6 FBDO qualification while working at the multiple to gain experience in practice while learning.
Asda Opticians would support by investing in additional hours so colleagues continue to be paid while studying and ensuring dedicated supervision from a GOC registered optical professional.
Hayley Tatum, Asda’s chief people and corporate affairs officer, said: ‘We are incredibly proud to launch this new apprenticeship scheme and offer our talented optical colleagues the chance to secure a recognised industry qualification whilst gaining practical experience at the same time.’
