Specsavers is threatening supermarket retailer Asda with legal action over marketing material which it claimed was deliberately misleading shoppers, according to The Sun.
The multiple's solicitors warned that the slogan 'Be a real spec saver at Asda' as well as a new Asda Opticians logo featuring overlapping ellipses were 'calculated to take advantage of our client's extensive reputation'.
Extracts from a letter to Asda from the solicitors published in the newspaper reveal that Asda has been warned to stop using the material or face proceedings for trademark infringement.
Specsavers' threat comes after an Asda promotion which accused its retail competitors of enticing customers into practices with low headline prices only to then spring additional charges (see page 8).
