Shoppers could face disruption and empty shelves when members of the GMB union plan to walk out of 20 distribution depots over pay disputes today.

However, a spokesman for the Wal-Mart-owned supermarket said that contingency plans were in place to ensure any disruption is kept to a minimum.

‘With over 150,000 people working for Asda we will be able to fill in any gaps and there should be no noticeable difference by way of distribution,’ he said.
