Asda strike may affect optical department

Eye care services at supermarket giant Asda could be one of the departments affected by a five-day strike involving thousands of workers.

Shoppers could face disruption and empty shelves when members of the GMB union plan to walk out of 20 distribution depots over pay disputes today.

However, a spokesman for the Wal-Mart-owned supermarket said that contingency plans were in place to ensure any disruption is kept to a minimum.

‘With over 150,000 people working for Asda we will be able to fill in any gaps and there should be no noticeable difference by way of distribution,’ he said.
