Optometry student Sandeep Kaur Dhallu has been awarded the first Bernard Gilmartin Optometry Scholarship.

Professor Gilmartin joined Aston in 1974 and his academic work includes a 13 year editorship of the journal Ophthalmic and Physiological Optics.

The university said its Scholarship was established to provide financial assistance to undergraduate, postgraduate, or post-doctoral students and enable them to present papers or posters of their research at international conferences.

Kaur Dhallu’s research involved assessing the visual function of patients implanted with advanced intraocular lenses following cataract surgery. She used the Scholarship to present her paper at the ARVO ophthalmology conference held in Florida this year.

Head of Aston’s ophthalmic research group, Dr Leon Davies, said: ‘I am delighted to award Sandeep the inaugural Bernard Gilmartin Optometry Scholarship. Sandeep’s work on intraocular lenses will become ever more important as the ageing population continues to expand, so I’m glad the Scholarship will enable Sandeep to share her findings with the international research community.’
