Professor Bernard Gilmartin has become the first optometrist to be presented with the Aston University Chancellor's Medal for outstanding and sustained service.

The medal was presented by University Chancellor Sir Michael Bett at the university's Degree Dinner earlier this month.

'Bernard has given 35 years' outstanding service to Aston since he joined the university as a lecturer,' said Sir Michael. 'During this time he has helped to further the world's understanding of myopia and related conditions, and contributed significantly to raising Aston's profile nationally and internationally, particularly in the field of vision sciences.'

Prof Gilmartin has been professor of optometry since 1998 and holds a number of other university posts.
