Australia aims to close back door

Seventeen UK qualified optometrists have gained registration in New South Wales, Australia, on the basis of a Trans Tasman Mutual Recognition Agreement (TTMRA).

Under the TTMRA, UK optometrists could have a back route into registration into Australia, via New Zealand. However, according to March's Australian Optometry the country's optometric registration boards are looking at ways to prevent this situation, as they are opposed to anything that might compromise standards. New Zealand currently recognises the UK optometry qualification, and British-trained optometrists who want to practise there do not need to re-qualify. Under the TTMRA New Zealand registered optometrists are free to register, without the need for re-qualification, in the Australian states of New South Wales, Victoria and Tasmania.
