It aims to open 100 stores by the end of June and 150 by the end of 2008.

The announcement followed the acquisition of two Australian optical chains in Victoria and South Australia, adding 40 new practices to the Specsavers network.

Visioncrest Optometrists and Vision Centre were purchased for an undisclosed sum and will be re-branded and made available to optometrists as franchises.

The company said that it had been 'staggered' by the number of British ex-pats walking into Australian Specsavers stores, carrying their UK Specsavers prescriptions.
