Specsavers has officially opened its first practice in Melbourne, Australia, and so far 35 optometrists from across the country have signed up with the company.
Optician announced Specsavers' plan to expand into Australia earlier this year along with plans to open 30 further UK practices, including 10 in Scotland (News, February 9).
The Australian operation includes a 2,000sq m warehouse in Melbourne that stocks a range of 330 frames selected for the Australian market. It aims to supply lenses and frames to over 100 practices by the year end.
Founders Doug and Mary Perkins have been meeting optometrists interested in joining the company at roadshows in Melbourne, Sydney, Newcastle, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth. Doug Perkins said: 'Our long-term view for Australia is to build a partnership with a network of practices across the country to help them to meet the eye care needs of Australians at an affordable price.'
