Dr Terry McMorris will present a lecture on 'Visual guidance while batting in cricket' on the second of three days of discussion on sports and vision at UMIST's Manchester Conference Centre. Peter Smith, SVA secretary, said: 'We've attracted a considerable amount of interest at home and overseas for this, the first event of its kind.' The SVA is promoting the conference, which opens on Friday September 24, as essential for the optical professional who wants to know more about sport and vision. 'Sporting activity is now high as a source of eye injuries,' said Mr Smith. 'Most injuries of this kind are preventable, and a lack of, or inadequate advice on eye protection is a likely source of legal action. Being well informed is the best protection.' The conference will be opened by British Olympic medallist triple jumper Jonathan Edwards on Friday September 24. Keynote speakers include Dr Caroline MacEwen, consultant ophthalmologist, Dundee, on sports eye injuries, Professor Peter Beek, University of Amsterdam on sports science and research, and Professor Nathan Efron on contact lenses in sports vision practice.
