A study into racial differences in the risk of glaucoma, determined by visual field (VF) loss patterns, found that the black population were more at risk, according to the Translational Vision Science & Technology.
Data from 209,036 participants working for the NHS for over 30 years was analysed using an artificial intelligence algorithm, and revealed that black participants had a higher risk of early VF loss and advanced loss when compared to non-hispanic whites. However, there were no differences observed for Asians or Hispanic whites.
It identified 14 archetype patterns across 1,946 glaucoma cases (2,581 eyes): four representing advanced loss patterns, nine of early loss, and one of no VF loss.
