Firefighter hospitalised during a blaze at the Coventry city centre branch of Specsavers

One firefighter was hospitalised during a blaze at the Coventry city centre branch of Specsavers recently.

The fire was discovered just before 8am by a cleaner who raised the alarm. As many as 30 firefighters were needed to tackle the blaze, which fire investigation teams later said was caused by a faulty LED light in the practice.

Group commander Mick Birch, from West Midlands Fire Service, told the Coventry Telegraph: ‘The fire spread very quickly but was contained to the shop as aggressive fire-fighting was deployed as soon as crews arrived at the scene.

‘One of our firefighters was taken to hospital suffering from heat stress as the heat had really built up inside the building itself.'
