B+L blames Fluorets issue on paper supply

More details have emerged about the decision by Bausch+Lomb to discontinue its production of Fluorets.

The company turned its back on the fluorescein sodium ophthalmic strips last month (29.03.13) citing alternative diagnostic options, availability of raw materials and cost.

Concerns followed as the profession tried to figure out a suitable alternative to help fit patients with contact lenses and assess ocular health.

B+L's latest statement further explained the termination: 'B+L has listened to the important feedback we have received in the UK recently regarding the discontinuation of Fluorets.

'Regrettably, our paper supplier ceased the part of their business that is critical to manufacturing this product. Despite our best efforts, we have not identified a viable alternative supplier willing to manufacture to the necessary standards.'
