Confederation panel tackles Minims issue

A panel has been set up by the Optical Confederation to reach a consensus view on the use of alternative fluorescein products.

Practitioners were in the meantime advised to use 1 per cent Minims for diagnosis, contact lens fitting and tear film work, in a fresh guidance update by the Confederation this week.

It follows Bausch+Lomb’s decision to cease manufacturing, distribution and sales of Fluorets ophthalmic strips globally (News 29.03.13), and underlines guidance issued by the College of Optometrists.

The Confederation noted that many practitioners remained concerned about using Minims, finding fluorescein sodium solution more difficult to deliver to the surface of the eye in appropriate quantities.
