A new NHS email system which is secure enough to transmit patient data could be a major breakthrough for optometry, an Association of Optometrists director is to tell its professional services committee.
In a memo about a NPfIT meeting held in January, optometrist Lyndon Taylor commented that not only was the 'Connect' system secure and available immediately, but it was accessible over the internet as well as NHSNet, the wide area network developed exclusively for the Health Service.
Therefore it had the added attraction of not costing local PCTs any major sum to link with the optical profession.
He suggested that the profession should start to guide its software suppliers 'down an NPfIT compatible route' so optometry is connected to the wider network, and is keen that a workshop be held for optometric software suppliers.
