A few weeks ago I was listening to my latest issue of Optometric Quarterly and was intrigued by the item on connecting to NHS Net. This is a means of being able to, among other things, transfer patient identifiable data around other medical colleagues securely via email.

A few weeks ago I was listening to my latest issue of Optometric Quarterly and was intrigued by the item on connecting to NHS Net. This is a means of being able to, among other things, transfer patient identifiable data around other medical colleagues securely via email.

For many years now I have thought it daft that we have not been part of the central core of Connecting for Health and therefore have not been able to make use of modern technology to transfer this sort of information quickly to either a patient’s GP or to an eye clinic. I have always found it fascinating to be told that the use of standard surface mail is more secure than normal email, given the number of times I have been phoned over the years by GP practices claiming they have never received a referral letter!
