All 44 NHS Sustainability and Transformation Plan (STP) leaders have been urged by the Clinical Council for Eye Health Commissioning (CCEHC) to leverage the benefits of eye care in their delivery plans.
The CCEHC said working at STP level had significant potential to improve care and prevention, and enable commissioners to change services at scales within likely available resources.
Two STP areas, Staffordshire and Birmingham & Solihull, have built eye care into their plans, but the CCEHC said the risk was that opportunities to modernise these ‘impactful and resource intensive services’ would be overlooked because eye disease was not in the news headlines like A&E waits.
