Call to extend prescribing rights to orthoptists

A letter has been sent to Jo Churchill MP by the British and Irish Orthoptic Society

A call to extend prescribing rights to orthoptists and other allied health professionals has been made in a letter sent to Jo Churchill MP, the minister for prevention, public health and primary care.

The British and Irish Orthoptic Society (BIOS) jointly signed the letter with the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists, the British Dietetic Association, the Royal College of Occupational Therapists and the Society of Radiographers.

BIOS highlighted how independent prescribing would enable orthoptists to support stretched ophthalmology services during the recovery phase of the pandemic.

It added that prescribing rights could lead to better support and more timely care, improved patient safety and system efficiency.
