A report from the Lions Eye Institute in Perth found 10 per cent of severe ocular trauma in children occurred during sporting activities, with permanent visual damage in 27 per cent of those cases, while 48 per cent of eye injuries occurred in the home while playing with easily accessible objects. They added that as visual development continued from birth to 7-8 years, visual outcomes after trauma were worse in children than in adults.
Uptake of protective eyewear in Australia remained low at around 19 per cent, with deterrents of discomfort, poor visibility, unsuitable material, lack of cosmetic appeal and lack of education.
