Residents in nursing and residential homes and day care facilities in Northern Ireland are to benefit from the introduction of new eye care guidelines, launched by the Guidelines and Audit Implementation Network (GAIN).

The guidelines are designed to ensure that domiciliary eye care is of the highest quality and well managed by home staff and ophthalmic professionals. They cover best practice for optometric care and treatment, ensuring accessible, flexible and responsive services which are safe and effective.

GAIN, made up of healthcare professionals and set up in 2008, stated that the introduction of the guidelines meant that care home staff now had access to a set of 'standards', many of which were already in place, to help ensure that those in their care had access to the highest quality eye care available.
