The Western Provident Association (WPA) requires policy holders to pay an annual premium equal to their age in years which will then entitle them to £50,000 of treatment with licensed drugs, including Avastin for the treatment of age-related macular degeneration.

The policy is only available to the under-65s and cannot be started after a disease has been diagnosed, reported The Times (April 25).

WPA chief executive Julian Stainton said the policy was both a business opportunity and challenge to the NHS.
