The lens material (nelfilcon A) used for Ciba Dailies is firmer than most other mid and high-water content materials, making them easier to handle, according to head of clinical and regulatory affairs at the company, Erich Bauman. 'Lenses made of lower modulus materials tend to flop over the finger,' he says. He adds that the geometry of the Dailies, which have a tri-curve back and front surface, improves handling, as does the lightstream technology process developed by Ciba Vision. The astronaut took two 30-lens packs of Focus Dailies on board Space Shuttle Colombia for the research mission which returned in May 1998. NASA vision consultant Dr Keith Manuel says he recommends a 50-100 per cent oversupply of lenses for a typical expedition.
