City and Islington College's Department of Applied Sciences has signed a memorandum of agreement with the Beijing Business School to deliver an international dispensing course in Beijing.

The agreement follows a successful joint venture vision appliances project for Olympic athletes carried out between the two education establishments last year. The memorandum was signed by City and Islington principal Frank McLoughlan with the vice-principal of BBS.

The course, which will commence in October 2008 and will be delivered in English, will be specifically designed and marketed towards international students from Africa, the Indian sub-continent and South East Asia. A number of students have signed up to the course already.

Trevor Hunter, head of the Department of Applied Optics, said that the intensive 40-week course would involve two 16-week blocks on the campus on the outskirts of Beijing and one eight-week block at City & Islington College.

He added that the course would prepare students for UK theory and practical exams, enabling them to experience the diversity of life in two major capital cities of the world.

'This exciting addition to the department's offer will give a unique opportunity to students from around the world who often have difficulty in funding their further education in the UK to study towards a dispensing qualification.

'It also provides for excellent professional development for the staff of the department.'
