The fully computerised drilling system can drill and slot prescription lenses for rimlesss mounts without the need of a skilled craftsman, says the company. The manufacturer's model number is fed into the machine and the two lenses are then put into the drill using lens edger positioning blocks. The operator then only has to press the start button. There is also a manual option for models not in the computer's memory. The company is marketing the new machine as versatile and capable of being developed for other uses such as lens edging and lens facetting. The average production for the drilling and assembly of an eight-hole rimless frame is about 30 minutes, says the company. With the new drill, the time taken to use the machine is approximately two-and-a-half to three minutes for eight holes and around six to 10 minutes for fitting the screws and nuts. It is safe to use on polycarbonate ophthalmic lenses. The CNC Optidrill can be seen on the Menrad Optics stand at Optrafair, and Berkshire Ophthalmic Labs can be contacted on 01635 36855.
