The College has issued renewed guidance on the Section 60 changes to the Opticians Act which take effect today ( July 1).
The guidance is likely to be read closely by new entrants to the contact lens supply business such as Tesco. It is understood to be revamping its aftercare advice before making lenses available.
The guidance includes clarification on the responsibilities of a registered optometrist 'generally directing' the sale or supply of contact lenses and on the duty to provide aftercare.
It states that while the optometrist is responsible he or she need not be on the premises while the sale takes place but protocols should be in place to make sure patients suffer no adverse event from the use of lenses or solutions.
The section on duty to provide aftercare also points to the Act's insistence that the seller of the lenses ensures that arrangements are in place for the patient to receive aftercare.
These arrangements should include contact help lines, advice on removal of lenses, importance of regular check-ups and adverse signs.
Chief executive, Bryony Pawinska said: 'The College has developed our guidance in consultation with the other optical bodies, from which we have received thanks for our collaborative approach and efficient turnaround of what is detailed and complex paperwork.'
The guidance is now available via the College website www.college-optometrists.org
