College lay member eyes new guidelines

The College of Optometrists' first lay member of its council attended her first meeting last month.

Rebecca Foster has already worked with the College since 1995 as a representative of consumer interests on a working party established to develop a quality system for practice management. She has been a member of the British Standards Institute since 1985, serving on a number of optical committees including ophthalmic optics, spectacle frames and lenses, contact lenses and low-vision aids. Under the terms of the Royal Charter, the College is able to appoint two lay members at its discretion and Ms Foster is the first to be appointed. One of the first issues Ms Foster is involved in is the major overhaul of the College's guidelines for professional conduct. Gwyneth Morgan, College president said: 'We are delighted to welcome our first lay member of council and we look forward to having a fresh perspective on the deliberations of council. 'Rebecca is no stranger to the College and we have the highest regard for her abilities.'
