College membership holds firm despite tough climate

Membership to the College of Optometrists was marginally up in 2008 compared to 2007, despite concerns in the sector that voluntary membership organisations could be hit by the economic downturn.

UK membership rose to 7,534 in 2008 from 7,476 in 2007 according to the annual report, due later this month. Student and pre-registration trainee memberships were also up from 2,555 to 2,667. College membership also includes UK fellows, non-practising members and overseas members, giving a total of 13,236 in 2008 against 13,134 in 2007.

According to the College, figures in the annual report are for its last financial year and it is still in the subscription run for 2008-2009.
