In a bid to boost the profession's global relations, the College of Optometrists has appointed María Arce-Moreira de Haagsma as director of international affairs.
Her appointment has been made to 'strengthen the College's role in engaging with the debate about international standards of education, research and practice'.
The College has over 580 international members from 56 different countries, and said this move aimed to ensure overseas members are supported.
Arce-Moreira de Haagsma will also be responsible for driving forward UK-based charities the World Council of Optometry (WCO) and the European Academy of Optometry and Optics, a statement added.
Bryony Pawinska, College chief executive, said: 'The UK is seen as a world leader in optometric education, research and standards. To strengthen this position, we are investing in the College's international affairs. Maria's appointment will ensure that we continue to develop our key relationships around the world, influence international policy and enhance the profile of the College and UK optometry worldwide.'
