College to axe CL and orthoptic diplomas

The College of Optometrists has decided it should no longer offer its higher qualifications - diplomas in contact lens practice (DipCLP) and orthoptics (DipOrth) - in their current format.

In a letter sent to universities last month, the College says it plans instead to offer new qualifications in partnership with other institutions, for optometrists 'wishing to practise in areas of special interest'.

'This system will give optometrists more flexibility, allowing them to take one university module, or work towards an MSc, and obtain a College qualification at the same time,' the letter stated.

According to the College, a number of university optometry departments, and NHS Education for Scotland, have indicated they would be interested in working with it to deliver the qualifications.
