A new eye care commissioning guide has been published by the Department of Health (DoH) in a bid to prevent the provision of 'disjointed' eye health services at a local level.

The guide which was put together in collaboration with the UK Vision Strategy initiative was launched last Friday, as part of the DoH's World Class Commissioning programme. The programme's remit is to educate senior NHS managers to take a 'more strategic' and 'long-term approach' to commissioning services, according to the DoH.

Commenting on the launch, chair of the UK Vision Strategy initiative and chief executive of the RNIB Lesley-Anne Alexander said: 'The guide enables us all to start to come to grips with the essentials for improving eye care and working towards Excellence in Eye Care Services.'
