Reading the article 'Contact lenses in sport' a general overview in optician, January 13, particularly the paragraphs CLs and eye protection, brought to mind a short article that appeared in optician almost exactly 40 years ago (October 21, 1966), written by my late father on 'Contact lenses as an eye protector'.

It dealt with two of triplets, aged 15 in Leeds, whom he had fitted with PMMA corneal lenses.

One of the girls' eyes had been protected by her contact lens, when at school a lacrosse stick had struck her in the eye. Within a few days she was able to wear her lenses again - comfortably all day.

Imagine my pleasant surprise when these two ladies, some 15 years ago, became patients of mine in Beaconsfield. They have their lenses checked at least annually, and are both wearing contact lenses all day and almost every day.
