A series of seminars around the country aimed at building confidence in prescribing continuous wear contact lenses begins in London this month. optician looks at what the events will offer practitioners

Practitioner education is the key to success with silicone hydrogel contact lenses, according to two leading authorities on the clinical management of continuous wear patients.
UK-trained optometrists Dr Lyndon Jones and Kathy Dumbleton of the Centre for Contact Lens Research at the University of Waterloo, Canada will aim to increase practitionersÕ confidence in continuous wear through a series of seminars at venues around the country starting this month. Hosted by Ciba Vision, the ÔGetting started in continuous wearÕ seminars will provide the latest information on the management of silicone hydrogel lens wearers and the results of clinical studies into overnight wear.
Two all-day seminars will be held, at London Heathrow on Sunday October 28 and The Belfry, Wishaw, North Warwickshire on Sunday November 4. Evening seminars will take place in Glasgow (October 29), Manchester (October 30), London (October 31) and Bristol (November 1).
Dr Jones said that the safety of overnight wear and the effective management of any complications that might arise were key issues for practitioners when considering whether to prescribe silicone hydrogels for continuous wear.
ÔOur experience with these lenses has been very positive. We will be presenting the Òclinical pearlsÓ we have learned over the past four to five years in order to build practitionersÕ confidence and help them achieve success.Õ
The lecture presentations will review the current status of these materials, suggest likely candidates for their use and identify those patients for whom the modality may be inappropriate. The all-day programme will also include an interactive quiz compiled by Dr Jones and Ms Dumbleton in which delegates can test their knowledge and learn about contact lens complications.
