Nearly a thousand pairs of sub-standard sunglasses have been seized from Surrey market stalls, prompting trading standards officials to issue warnings about the dangers of inadequate sun protection.

The sunglasses were discovered during raids by county council trading standards teams at markets and car boot sales across the county.

Many of the frames were brightly coloured and came in novelty shapes designed to attract children. Steve Ruddy from trading standards at Surrey County Council warned parents to buy lenses bearing a CE mark from a well-reputed optical practice. 'These frames do not give adequate protection to children's eyes and could lead to eyesight damage over time,' he said.
