Italian police have seized nearly 600,000 counterfeit frames in an undercover operation in Milan.
The haul consisted of 588,997 items with a value of up to €6m. It included around 450,000 pairs of sunglasses that did not have the CE mark, and just under 60,000 pairs of ophthalmic frames, which were lacking in all legal requirements, according to a report on eyesway.com. Frames specifically for children were also recovered.
Details of operation 'Overlook' were made public at a press conference held last week by the Milan Financial Police unit. It was revealed that the fake goods were ready to be sold on the Italian market at an average price of just €7.
