Volunteers dispensed 138 pairs of spectacles with powers ranging from +9.5D to -13D to the Crisis at Christmas guests returning to collect frames donated by Specsavers and glazed by EssilorLuxxotica.

The London Crisis at Christmas Opticians and Eyecare service, provided by Vision Care for Homeless People in collaboration with Crisis, celebrated its 20th anniversary in December, as well as increasing from one clinic to nine.

Penny Ardley, a dispensing optician from St Albans, joined the Crisis at Christmas team for the first time this year after a colleague told her about the volunteering opportunity.

‘Everyone is extremely friendly and very grateful.  It is good to see a different aspect of optics, and I plan to volunteer at clinics every Monday this year,’ she said.

Sahid Uddin, who lost one eye in an attack some years ago, is pictured with the volunteers after collecting his frames, including clinic manager Debra Farbey, contact lens optician Jane Partridge, Ardley and optometrist Tazeen Haider.
