Dame Judi brings AMD into the public eye

Actress Dame Judi Dench was the focus of widespread media coverage this week after it emerged she was suffering from macular degeneration.

The exposure prompted the Macular Disease Society (MDS) to repeat its calls for a rising population of AMD patients to be properly supported. In an interview with The Mirror, Dench said she had been treated for wet AMD in one eye and dry in the other, and could no longer make out faces.

'I can't read scripts any more because of the trouble with my eyes,' she told the newspaper. 'And so somebody comes in and reads them to me, like telling me a story.'
