David ShannonBradley Wiggins fan and former AOP chairman David Shannon has urged the optical sector to get back on the saddle this year after being appointed UK development manager of Optometry Giving Sight.

Shannon, who donned sideburns and lycra during the Optics Cycling for Sight campaign three years ago, will lead a fundraising team co-ordinating events around this year’s World Sight Day Challenge.

The charity has set an overall target of raising £25,000 by covering a combined distance of 25,000 miles.

Shannon said: ‘Optics Cycling for Sight, is a real fun way for individuals, companies or practices to raise much needed funds for some of the 600 million people in the world who are needlessly visually impaired simply through the lack of vision correction. You can organise your own challenge anytime in September or October or may want to join the CET accredited Optics Tour of Yorkshire on Sunday August 30.’
